Safety, Reliability and Maintainability Engineering support

GKN Aerospace Engineering Services - Systems Group has a demonstrable record of providing a range of high quality safety assurance, reliability engineering and maintainability engineering services to major UK aerospace and defence companies and service users in support of major design and development contracts.

In support of these disciplines, GKNAES has extensive knowledge in the use of the industry recognised safety, reliability and maintainability analysis tools and techniques and is conversant with the majority of the international commercial and military regulatory requirements, including JAR, FAR, UK Defence Standards (DEF-STANs) and US Military Standards (MIL-STDs).

System Safety Analysis

System safety analysis is the methodology by which the safety integrity of subsystems, and consequently the aircraft / vehicle as a whole, can be assessed. It is performed in order to ensure that, as far as possible, the potential hazards associated with the design and operation of a system have been adequately analysed and mitigated, either by design or procedure, so as to reduce the level of risk to an acceptable level. The process involves the identification of hazards and their associated accident sequences and, where possible, the calculation of safety targets for each hazard and the subsequent assessment of the system to determine whether the safety targets have been met.

GKNAES staff will follow the safety analysis processes mandated on our customers by the requirements of the appropriate regulatory bodies and / or the appropriate safety standards.

Reliability Engineering

Reliability - the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time (IEEE 90).

GKNAES engineering staff provide support to the customer in the development and production of system FMEA and FMECA documentation using accepted techniques that include the use of in-service data or predictive methods where appropriate, to deliver bespoke reliability analysis documentation solutions.

Maintainability Engineering

Maintainability is a characteristic of design and installation that can be expressed as the probability that an item will conform to specified conditions within a given period of time when maintenance action is performed in accordance with prescribed procedures and resources (Ref. MIL-HDBK-472).

GKNAES engineering staff provide support to the customer in the development of system Maintainability Predictions and other associated maintainability documentation. As a discipline with ever increasing significance, especially within the commercial aircraft operating community, GKNAES have assisted customers in the development of bespoke maintainability analysis documentation to satisfy the prime suppliers requirements.
